On Sunday 28th September 2014 a group of eight Yorkshire Cats turned into Spartan Warriors for a day by completing the Reebok Spartan Sprint race near Ripon North Yorkshire.

What is a Spartan Race? Spartan Race is the world’s leading obstacle race series that challenges entrants to ‘discover their inner warrior’. More than 500,000 have taken part in Spartan races to date. In 2013, over 60 races will be held around the world.

After a slow build up due to slow registration, as so many had attended the event, we were eventually lined up in the middle of a few hundred people for the 11am race, which started at 11.30 due to SATNAV propblems for event organisers – lets not go there as thats a whole other story.

Battling through the crowds we tackled the 7km course with 15 obstacles, including hurdles, barriers, rope climb, monkey bars and what can only be described as a stinky mud swamp crossing.

Fitness and age were the winners with Liberty Mabaleka soon leaving the rest of us behind with Jimmy, Paul, Shane, Mark, Mick, Ryan and Danny hot on his heals.

Finish times ranged from an impressive 38 min to a respectable 1hr 20min with conjestion being blamed at least some delays – it was really busy – honest! We are still eagerly awaiting for the official times to be published on their website.

What was most impressive was the fact that as we recovered with mud up to our chests, cuts to our knees, medals around our necks and a ‘free’ can of Coors Light in hand all anyone could ask was ‘When are we doing the next one?’

All round a fantastic day and we are already looking out for the next event.
