Ali's Work Placement
On the 17th June 2007 I joined Cougar Automation for a 10 week summer placement in my holidays from Bath University.
My first day at work having no prior knowledge of what a Systems Integrator does I wasn’t entirely sure what Cougar would have in store for me.
For my first two weeks I found myself doing the graduate project. A project designed to give a basic understanding of what the company does and how, using a hands on approach. It is written in such a way that as well as learning a lot technically it also allows opportunities to meet and speak to others in the office.
Not only was everybody happy to give me a point in the right direction, but were friendly and supportive right from the beginning and went out of their way to make me feel included in any social activities.
During my time at Cougar I have been given responsibility to work on real projects and trusted to make good judgements and ask for help when needed, and the work has been interesting and varied.
I was also given the opportunity to go on site and see Cougar’s work in action and how work differs on site on a live system to in the office.
More recently I participated in the annual company day which gave a good opportunity to get to know everybody better through team activities. Talks were given about the company and its performance. It was great how every member of staff was included and encouraged to make suggestions on how the company could be improved and to see how suggestions were actually taken on board and used. Consequently Cougar seems to be continuously evolving to deliver great customer service and a great place to work.
10 weeks later I’m a lot wiser about the work of a Systems Integrator and I can’t wait to come back next summer. |
