Big Smiles At Festival of Sport

Cougar Cat Simon tells how his rugby coaching at the Test Valley School’s Festival of Sport brought big smiles to the children.

On a wet St.Georges Day morning (that soon brightened up!!) and as part of a seven strong rugby coaching team all from Andover RFC, I started to set-up my session for an intensive day’s coaching at the Test Valley School’s Festival of Sport.

An annual event that gives Years 4,5 and 6 children (ages 9-11) a taster session at a number of different sports that normally they may not have an opportunity to experience.  This year the sports represented were Rugby, Cricket, Athletics, Karate, Table-Tennis, Basketball, Hockey and Football.  Over 500 children attended, representing 19 different schools including a Special Needs school.

Each introductory session is 40 minutes long and we normally had around 30 children to coach.  The session gave us a chance to do some individual ball skills, some team games and then progress onto the rucking pads and finally the tackle bags (this part of it was the most fun for the children even the girls!!).
After an exhausting 7 sessions (4 in the morning, and 3 in the afternoon), the day came to a close, no injuries, big smiles from the children and a very satisfying and rewarding day’s rugby coaching.  Looking forward to next year already!!
