Upgrades

If you have control systems that are based on out of date hardware and equipment you are not alone. With most systems installed in the late 1980's and early 1990's much industrial control and automation infrastructure is well past its sell by date. You are not in a unique position if you are keeping your fingers crossed that old equipment won't break down and there are no spares available.

It can often seem very daunting to make a start at upgrading your control infrastructure. It's hard to get funding if it's working fine (for now). Someone has to write specifications for what is needed. How will we keep the plant running while we change over?

We have worked hard to solve these problems and as a result we probably have industry leading experience and expertise in making these upgrades happen without wasting your money or putting your operation at risk. Key measures we have developed include:

• Make the new system do exactly the same as the original. Don't mix up equipment upgrades with changing what the system does.

• Carry out upgrades in incremental phases rather than a big bang.

• Plan the infrastructure so that it can be installed with the minimum of disruption.

• Put in place contingency plans so that if things do go wrong, we can quickly roll back to how things were before so you keep your plant running while we have a rethink.
