Cougar Automation engineer wins Young Engineer of the Year Award

James Bentley’s innovative and progressive work developing an IoT pump simulator using Rockwell Automation technologies was honoured by the Pump Centre at its annual gala dinner. James Bentley, a Project Engineer in our Hampshire office, has received the Pump Centre’s Young Engineer of the Year Award 2018. The award, in the Technician category, was presented to James at the Pump Centre’s annual gala dinner on 2 May 2018 for his work developing an Internet of Things (IoT) pump simulator.

The Pump Centre provides its member organisations with services associated with pumps, pumping systems and related plant and equipment. The awards highlight the work of young engineers in the supply chain, and are open to engineers who have made a significant contribution to their company in the this area.

“We’re proud of James, a Cougar engineer and ex-apprentice, for winning this award,” says Derek Burton, Business Unit General Manager at Cougar Automation. “We nominated James for his tireless work ethic and for how he demonstrates responsibility and leadership at a level we’d expect from a senior engineer.”

“His work within the IoT sector has included creating and developing a pumping application that we believe will be a viable solution for many new and existing customers,” says Patrick Gains, Project Manager at Cougar Automation. “It was a challenging project that required an innovative solution; James approached it with vigour and a can-do attitude.”

“The initial brief was to develop a simple IoT proof of concept that monitored temperature and humidity values. However, problems meant the project wasn’t operational,” explains James. “I proposed alternative solutions that solved these problems and exceeded the initial brief. To pursue my idea, I learnt new programming languages, platforms and concepts.”

James’ simulation was developed using Rockwell Automation UK technologies.  Jason Smith, Water Industry Account Manager at Rockwell endorsed James’ award nomination.

James has successfully presented his simulation to several clients. You can watch a video of the completed pump simulator demo here.

Congratulations James on this well-deserved honour.
